Happy Holiday Giving!

Astrology can provide help at gift selection time. It will be easier if you approach the signs as twelve archetypes or patterns that color the way we look at the world. You may identify with your Sun sign (birth sign) or you might express your Moon sign (Home, family, emotions).

My clients know that a chart for the exact time of birth reveals characteristics and decision-making patterns that are theirs alone. So in thinking about the way you approach the season, it may be helpful to allow yourself to identify the way you personally feel, rather than the way you should feel. The way you really, really, really feel could provide insight into the ways in which you can design a holiday that brings personal Joy and Harmony, rather than suffer through a ritual designed for someone in the past

Before choosing a gift, consider each of these Signs or Twelve guides and choose the ones that “feel” right based upon the way you experience what the other person is like. It might be helpful to discuss your choice with someone else that knows the person who will receive the gift. This will add a perspective not based solely upon your own point of view.

Let’s interview each sign and see what they say about gifts they like and what’s on their list:

Aries or Principle # 1:

List? I don’t have time to make a list; I have to exchange the two gifts I bought yesterday.  I can hardly wait for the big day.  It’s a good thing I have so many pre-holiday parties to attend. I can’t wait to see the look on my brother’s face when he sees his new top-of-line Mountain Bike that I’ve had my eye on.  Everyone will be impressed with the new barbells I bought for Mom. And the best gift yet, I got 2 Super Bowl tickets for me and dad.  (Note that some Arians buy what they like, assuming that others will be as enthusiastic as they).

Taurus or Principle # 2:

List?  Actually holidays for me are all about singing carols by the fire, serving platters of gourmet goodies with a fine wine or mulled cider if weather permits. Comfort is the theme. People say that I usually weigh costs very carefully except at gift giving time. I remember I gave my daughter a treasured family ring, she is just like me she prefers “real” jewelry.  I’m giving my son a check for college expenses. I really want a painting I saw at the Gallery.  It is reasonable now, but once this artist is discovered, it will be worth a fortune.  I believe that gifts should have a “real” value even though they are modest in cost.

Gemini or Principle #3:

What do I want?  Can it be a party?  Can I invite the neighbors and that new friend we met last week, or why not have an evening just talking after the movie or play.  Remember when we were kids how much fun it was to get new toys?  They have some great toys in the Sharper Image catalog. The top of my list is this new cell phone with 15 features; it even plays mp3’s! I also have some books on my list.  Shall I read you my list? What do you think???”

Cancer or Principle#4:

My sister says when I make a list it often involves food and items for the kitchen. It could be true; I’d love to have a bread machine.  I also saw a cool kit where you can make your own wine. I hope Aunt Julie remembers how much I loved her pumpkin bread.  Last year she gave me a candle that smelled like apple pie baking. One of the best Christmas gifts I ever received was my Siamese cat Tai-Tai who could use some new cat toys.  Gift don’t really matter that much, I had a great holiday the year we were snowed in and just stayed home roasting marshmallows in the fireplace.

Leo or Principle #5:

The Leo woman says, “I remember the year I was the star of our school pageant.  My costume was gold satin trimmed with fur.  How about the year you gave me the diamond earrings.”  The Leo man says, “I like the monogram golf clubs.  I remember that my favorite gift was the new bicycle of my own, not my brothers old one.”  She says, “I remember the matched cashmere sweater set, I was the only one in my class to have one.  One year all I wanted was a real gold necklace.”  He smiles and replies “yeah, and I wanted one gold earring.  But the best gift, was tailor made shirts with French cuffs and my monogram.”

Virgo or Principle #6:

No one would believe it, but all I wanted was a customer built closet…. a place for everything.  One year I asked for a high-speed drill.  Who says girls don’t need tools?  If only I get the new database software I was telling you about, I’ll be happy.  Well… maybe I need an ergonomic chair to support my back.  A motorized golf cart would be nice.  You know a membership to the health club would be nice, well actually I would prefer a full body exercise machine.

Libra or Principle #7:

At the top of my list is a crystal chandelier for the dining room.  I want season’s ticket to the opera.  I’ll really be happy if someone gives me a set of matched designer luggage.  You know I love perfume, I mean real perfume not cologne.  Just renew my membership at the airline club, oh yes I want a new violin and sheet music and I need the piano tuned.

Scorpio Principle #8:

I would like the puzzle I saw that solves a mystery.  You know the one that as you put the puzzle together you follow the clues to the solution.  By the way my favorite mystery writer has a new book out, and did I mention there having a sale at Victoria’s Secret?  They really know how to design intimate apparel.  Have you ever had a full body massage?

Sagittarius Principle #9:

I am really looking forward to this year!  The Christmas club piggy bank is full.  We can spend the holidays in the Virgin Islands, or do you think the family would go for Christmas in Hawaii?  What about skiing in Vail?  I could really use some ski sweaters and wax for my skis.  You might hint that I want some audio books for my commute. You know how I love books; make sure to tell them non-fiction only please.  Let’s go to the bookstore, but first I’ll call my buddy and see what’s on his book list this year.

Capricorn Principle #10:

What’s on my list?  Well, that new genealogy software would be great, or a miter box for my workshop. I saw a beautiful silver business card holder that would go perfect with silver framed 5-generation family picture I keep on my desk, or that matching leather briefcase and palm pilot cover.  I think they even make a matching cell phone holder.  You know I could always use a new black suit.

Aquarius Principle #11:

What would I like?  Oh, I saw a sculpture at the modern art gallery that I can just visualize in my garden room.  I would also like a bubbling fountain for my bedroom.  A friend of mine had a pastel portrait done at the art fair; the artist captured her unique qualities.  What a neat gift that would be!  Some essential oils for my aromatherapy diffuser would be great.  One of my favorite gifts was the weekend retreat at a spa.  It was the total freedom from the usual routine that I liked.

Pisces Principle #12:

Hmmm what do I want? Let’s see… you know I love candles, and flowers, I even saw some candles with real flowers in them, as long as it has a pleasant fragrance.  Some meditation tapes to listen to at the sanctuary would be nice.  I saw a waterproof camera case that would let me take photographs of my scuba diving trip.  I bought my best friend some mini velvet pillows filled with herbs and essential oils that are supposed to induce dreams.  I wish I had picked up some for myself.  But enough about me, I would be just as happy if you would make a donation to the center for world peace.
