Goodbye 2001, Hello 2002!

I have mixed emotions as I look back on the events and impressions of the year just ending. As you look back to January 2001, it may be difficult to recall exactly what you were doing and with whom. For some of you it was a job change for others it was a change in attitude toward an important person in your life. Still others found that the changes brought endings. Someone leaves or someone dies. One thing is clear: change has been a part of our lives.

As American citizens, the biggest change has been adjusting and absorbing the shock of September 11th. One day you feel secure in the protection of our military to keep wars away from our shores. September 11th shattered that illusion. We discovered that we are more patriotic than we had known. We also learned the meaning of bravery and courage as the firefighters, police, medics, and ordinary citizens demonstrated it for us.  They overcame their own fears and helped complete strangers to survive. In many cases it meant the loss of their own lives.

As we look ahead to 2002, we do so with a new understanding of true values. We have a fresh perspective upon the importance of home, family, and country. When you make your list of ways you want to bring that new perspective into your daily routine, the New Years resolutions will help align your intent with planned action. I for one will resolve to spend more time with my grandchildren to learn and to teach each other about life.

Each of us has talents and knowledge we can share and therefore enrich the lives of others.

I would be pleased if you would share some of your New Years resolutions with me. It may inspire me to add a few more to my own list.
