Earth, Air, Water: Elemental Characteristics

Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.

We are not looking for Signs; we are looking for behavior that expresses this Principle. An Aries can express the Earth element. A Cancer that I know has a Taurus Moon and planets in other Earth signs. He exemplifies the Earthy traits even though his Sun is in a Water sign. So trust yourself to recognize behavior and for the moment, forget the Sun Sign. It may be helpful to analyze someone whose birthday you do not know.

Earthy persons are practical. They want results that are in line with the amount of energy they have to expend to achieve the desired outcome. They will work tirelessly if they are assured that they will end up with a tangible result. They also have a talent for recognizing where the money or value lies. An old table they bought at the auction just happens to be a genuine and valuable heirloom. The piece of property at the edge of town is now in the middle of a proposed shopping center.

An Earth person is willing to work hard to be able to buy luxuries. They enjoy comfort. A penny saved is a penny that can be spent (along with other saved pennies) on a deeply cushioned velvet chair. They tend to move slowly and are careful to choose words carefully as if they were afraid they might run out. They like gifts that have real value. For example: gold cufflinks or diamond earrings would be good choices. They often give gifts that require personal effort. Did they take your car to be washed? Perhaps they cooked a gourmet meal for you. They have given the greatest gift of all: a part of themselves.

Air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.

Air persons are ready to talk about any subject you want to mention. They will give you information about subjects about which you care not at all. They will challenge you to debate the current events, the state of the educational system, or the importance of the latest non-fiction book they have read recently.

The Air person is interested in communicating, in relating, and in discussing the state of the world. If they have an extensive personal library, belong to several discussion groups, and are campaigning for their pet project, they probably have an Air statement in their chart they are willing to compromise and will listen attentively to your side of the argument. The problem arises when they are asked to stay on a repetitive task or remain quiet without an opportunity to express themselves.  An Air person needs a chance to express an opinion and to debate the issue.

Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces

Water signs are interested in how you feel, not necessarily what you think. It has a lot to do with doing things the way they have been done in the past. This is the way habits are established. Water signs are emotionally attached to home, family and their hereditary past.  The bridge between present and the past is well worn. They find solace in visiting the “olden days” as in museums and antique malls. You will find that they are sentimental about the pressed corsage from their first prom and the ticket stub from the World Series from twenty years ago. The Water person has an extended family of close friends that are treated like family as long as they are loyal and trustworthy. People are drawn to them for comfort and understanding.

They are often torn between being the nurturing person and wanting to be taken care of by someone who will nurture them. They need to feel secure in a relationship but paradoxically; they need time alone to re-charge. The close bond between the present and past can put them in touch with their sub-conscious mind. Psychic impressions are very real to them. You are likely to trigger an emotional response if you insist upon discussing the logic of a thing or the importance of being practical. In the final analysis, they have a way of getting the things they need, they seem to attract what they need by some inner law of attraction.
